Meet Earnest, a UI/UX designer who has seamlessly transitioned from traditional graphic design to the forefront of blockchain technology. Based in Lagos, Earnest is dedicated to enhancing user experiences in the Web3 ecosystem. He currently leads product design and user experience at Injex Finance, a decentralized exchange (DEX) protocol built on the Injective blockchain. With skills spanning from UI/UX design to AI integration, Earnest embodies adaptability and innovation in the ever-evolving world of Web3.
Earnest's journey into the blockchain realm began after several years in graphic design within the Web2 space. "Crypto was gaining popularity, and there was a lot of talk about the future of money," he recalls. Intrigued by the possibilities, he shifted into product design in the Web3 arena around 2020.
His first significant role was with Imbue Network, a freelancing platform on the Polkadot ecosystem known for its focus on decentralization and DAO autonomy. As a contract UI/UX designer, Earnest enhanced the platform's user experience, fueling his passion for creating tools that empower people—especially in regions where job opportunities are scarce. "I enjoyed building something that helps people find work," he explains.
While working at Imbue Network, Earnest learned about Joba Network. Coming from a developing country, he understood the profound impact such platforms can have. Seeking to continue his mission of empowering others, he researched similar projects and found Joba Network to be exceptional.
Impressed by Joba's achievements and ambitious goals, Earnest took the initiative to reach out. "I'm a big fan of reaching out directly," he admits. He contacted Marisa from Joba Network via Telegram, showcased his portfolio, and after completing a task, became part of the Joba community. His proactive approach and alignment with Joba's vision made for a perfect match.
Navigating the job market in the Web3 space comes with unique challenges, especially regarding trust and secure payments. "One of the biggest issues is the lack of trust and the risk of not getting paid," Earnest notes. Dealing with anonymous clients on decentralized platforms can be risky, but he has found success through direct outreach and social media.
"Reaching out directly has worked best for me," he says. By contacting founders and clients personally, he builds genuine connections and secures projects that align with his skills. However, he is cautious of the risks and balances the creative freedom and higher earning potential against potential pitfalls.
Earnest offers a wide range of services, including landing page designs, motion graphics, and meme art—a nod to the vibrant meme culture in Web3. "You have to align your services with market demand," he emphasizes. To manage this variety, he collaborates with other freelancers, effectively running a small creative studio.
"It's easier to collaborate than to do everything yourself," he explains. This approach allows him to meet client demands efficiently and fosters a community of creatives working together.
Embracing technology, Earnest incorporates AI tools into his workflow. Using software like Midjourney and ChatGPT for prompt generation, he produces high-quality illustrations and designs quickly. "Clients are amazed when I deliver in a day what traditionally takes weeks," he shares. AI integration has significantly enhanced his ability to meet tight deadlines without compromising quality.
When it comes to his professional preference, Earnest leans towards freelancing. "Freelancing gives me freedom and control over my time," he explains. While acknowledging the responsibilities that come with managing clients and finances, he values the autonomy and potential for higher earnings.
Comparing this with contract and full-time roles, he notes that time constraints and extended projects can limit productivity and income. "Now is the time to take risks and maximize earnings," he asserts, embracing the opportunities in the gig economy within the Web3 space.
Earnest's active sharing of his work and experiences on platforms like Twitter and Reddit has positioned him as an influencer in the Web3 design community. "My goal was just to document my growth," he says. His transparency and willingness to educate others have garnered him a substantial following of like-minded professionals.
This visibility has led to additional opportunities, such as ambassador roles with companies like OneKey, a crypto hardware wallet. By discussing critical issues like security and scams in Web3, he's not only provided valuable insights but also formed partnerships that align with his interests.
For those hesitant about entering the Web3 space, Earnest's advice is straightforward: "Don't hesitate to reach out and be adaptable." He encourages newcomers to leverage emerging technologies like AI, seek collaboration, and not be afraid of direct communication. "Sometimes, a direct message can open doors to great opportunities," he emphasizes.
Earnest represents Joba Network's vision of empowering professionals in the decentralized world. His proactive approach, adaptability, and embrace of new technologies exemplify the qualities that Joba fosters in its community.
By providing a platform where individuals like Earnest can find meaningful work and build networks without traditional barriers, Joba Network is shaping the future of work in Web3.
